New Catch the Ace Rounds This Fall: 17 Fresh Decks in Canada

Every fall, a wave of Legions, Lions clubs, hospital foundations and community groups reshuffle the deck and start a new round of Catch the Ace (called Chase the Ace in much of Western and Atlantic Canada). This year is no different. As of this week, 17 rounds we track have just started, most within their first five weeks and with nearly the whole deck still in play.

Here's what a fresh round means, and where they're running.

Why a new round is different

A new round starts with 52 sealed envelopes and a small progressive pot. Each week:

  • One ticket is drawn and wins the weekly prize.
  • That ticket holder opens their chosen envelope. If it's the Ace of Spades, they win the jackpot and the round ends.
  • If not, the card is removed and the jackpot grows for the next draw.

Early in a round, the jackpot is modest and the chance that any single envelope holds the Ace is low (1 in 52 in week one). Rounds tend to get louder in the final 10 to 15 weeks, when the deck is small and the pot is big. Supporters who play from the start, though, are funding the cause from day one. For the full rules, see How Catch the Ace works.

A few worth a closer look

  • Loto As de pic (Fondation evenko) is a brand-new game that had already reached $62,064 by its second week.
  • Barrie Legion stood at $55,000 by week 4. That's a strong start, and it's shared between the Legion and the Rotary Club of Barrie's local charities.
  • La Broquerie Helping Hands is starting over right after a big finish: its last round paid out $348,445, and the new series opened with a $25,000 pot and a full 52-card deck.
  • SickKids is two weeks into a new round, with half of ticket sales going to the hospital.
  • Hospice Georgina is now on its tenth game. Proceeds fund visiting hospice and grief support in Georgina.

Catch the Ace exists to raise money for local causes. Decide on a budget before you buy, and don't increase it because a pot is growing. Tickets are generally for adults (18+ or 19+ depending on province) who are physically in the province where the lottery is licensed. If gambling stops being fun, free and confidential help is available. In Ontario, call ConnexOntario at 1-866-531-2600. In Quebec, call Jeu : aide et référence at 1-800-461-0140. For other provinces, see our responsible gambling page.

Play the Ace is independent. We don't sell tickets or run the lotteries listed unless marked Sponsored. Know a new round we've missed? Tell us.
